Many Clifton residents, when I ask about the issues affecting them, mention refuse collection. People are frustrated by the need to store, with limited space, three recycling bins and a rubbish bin and by the visual impact of bins and overflowing black bags on the pavements.
The Council should look at improving the way in which refuse and recycling is collected, within existing budgets. Viable alternatives exist to outmoded bin-collection. Large sealed outdoor containers with one-way access for recyclables could be carefully concealed around Clifton.
This would improve the visual environment, reduce the number of bin lorries in the streets and remove the need to store waste at home. Bristol, as European Green Capital, should be leading the way on this type of initiative.
